If you want to create data-driven and creative video marketing material, one of the best ways to go about it is through storytelling.
Telling a story doesn’t have to be as complex as you think. You don’t need a huge cast of characters and tons of story arcs for video marketing purposes.
However, what does help is to have a conflict, resolution, identifiable characters, and a setting that works within its own sets of rules.
Let’s walk through this step by step.
Establish the Rules
Before determining the story you want to tell, you’ll need to establish the rules of the universe you’re creating. Each video, or video series, is like a microcosm - a tiny world of its own.
You’re not bound by the rules of our world for this. What’s important, however, is to keep your ideal client in mind. What type of world will they identify with? For instance, if you’re targeting a young, geeky crowd, you could create a sci-fi fantasy world that brings back the elements they enjoy about geek culture.
But that same universe wouldn't work for millennial women who love to travel and discover new cultures.
Once you establish how your universe works - and it can be as creative as you want it to be - stay within the confines of these rules! Creative doesn’t mean incoherent. What makes a story compelling isn’t how close it resembles our own reality but rather how much sense it makes within its own set of rules.
Choose a Tone That Resonates
What do you want your audience to feel when they go through your story?
Sad? Hopeful? Surprised? Rolling on the floor with laughter?
Whatever it is, you want your target audience to feel SOMETHING. A video that elicits no emotional reaction will be quickly forgotten.
Keep your tone consistent throughout your video. If you’re making a video series, keep the tone consistent throughout your series as well.
Weave Your Data-Driven Story
Now that you have a creative universe and a tone to go along with it, it’s time to craft a story.
How does your product or service solve the pain points of your target client?
What does the initial, pain-filled situation look like compared to the end result of using your offering?
Make your product or service the hero of your story. Make sure to use data that backs up:
- How you can help
- Why your audience should care
- Exact results they can expect
Inserting this data organically in a story will make it more digestible and compelling so that your prospect is more likely to remember.
